It's Summer Time!!! - My First Swedish Summer

It summer time once again!!! This is the time of the year where the beaches are full and the shopping malls stopped selling clothes.

During summer, American and European television shows made us believe that girls are showing off their upper assets and guys showing off their abs. Those shows made us believe that during summer, bikini-clad women would lied down to enjoy the sun. Well, sorry to say, not all what you see on television is happening during summer, especially a Swedish summer.

When i was young, I told myself that I would like to experience the 4 astronomical seasons in Europe. So when I got posted around Europe a couple of years back, I was happy because my dreams came through. My first trip to Scandinavia, it was late fall and winter seasons. I never got to make a snowman but i was happy to see the snow. Once, I remember our convoy got stucked on the freeway during a snowstorm while returning from a party. We had to wait close to 3 hours before we can resume the journey. I also remembered that my friends and I got lost after venturing out without a map (eventually we took a taxi back the hotel). But still, it was fun.

A few months later, I unexpectedly returned to Scandinavia again, just in time to witness late winter and spring seasons.

The City of Borås

In April 2006 , I was given an assignment in Sweden. I was looking forward to this work-cum-vacation trip because this will complete my childhood dream of experiencing the 4 astronomical seasons. The flight from Kuala Lumpur to the Swedish capital city was bonebreaking because of intermittent turbulence but I arrived safely. It was decided that my colleagues and I will be stationed in the textile town of Borås (pronounced as boh-ross), some 1 hours drive from the port city of Göteborg (pronounced as yeah-tah-boi). Göteborg is the second largest city in Sweden after Stockholm.

Borås Town Centre or Borås Centrum

As you can see from the picture above, THERE'S NO PEOPLE!!! The whole town is empty and it's only 2:47:00PM!!! Aren't supposed there to be lots of people walking around, shopping and stuffs? It looked like the television shows were bluffing us.

Summer Depression

Ever heard of the word "Midnight Sun"? Do you know what it meant? If you don't, try imagining this - it's already 6PM and you would expect the sky to display the sun disappearing into the horizon in a firery manner. You've waited and waited but the sun still hasn't disappear. You've waited a bit longer and finally the sky turns dark. What the!!?? It's 11PM!!! What the hell is going on? Well, I guess since daylight is longer, maybe the night will be longer too. Boy i was wrong... because dawn starts at 3:30AM and I still haven't sleep. How to sleep lah like that? By 4:30AM, the sun came out!!! And by 5AM, I can hang my clothes out to dry!!!

Anyway, I managed to take a series of pictures of this phenomenon and would like to share it with you guys. I took the whole series of photos on 25th June 2006 starting from 4:56PM. The weather today is very very cloudy. (Note: I took all these photos using my Nokia 6670 camera phone, so don't expect quality).
